Film Review - The Fourth Kind

"In 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. Modern-day, Alaska, where-mysteriously since the 1960s-a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered. Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented. The Fourth Kind exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film." -imdb

I just finished watching "The Fourth Kind" and I need a new pair of pants, horror movies don't often scare me, more often I am frightened by reality and things that could be real. The Fourth Kind does a great job of presenting something that could be real. I did a bit of digging and the stories about Nome Alaska are far from untrue, Nome has always had a very high missing person/murder rate, with the majority of cases going unsolved, FBI investigations into police corruption revealed no monetary or civil gains into covering up these disappearances, the FBI still continues to investigate, alot since 1960 the FBI has visited Nome more than two thousand times thats five times more visits than Anchorage which is 70 times the population of Nome.

The footage of Dr. Abigail and her patients is visually disturbing, there is something in that woman's eyes that makes me believe this is more than smoke and mirrors. The real footage is blended in with the film, when things were actually recorded or filmed the director cuts the screen up and shows you both at the same time making for a mind bending mesh of reality and drama. The emotion displayed by her patients is very real looking.

The film is directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi and stars Milla Jovovich as Dr. Abigail Tyler, check this one out!

SPOILER ALERT
SPOILER ALERT - DO NOT CONTINUE READING IF YOU CARE ABOUT SPOILERS
SPOILER ALERT

The film shows footage of Dr. Tyler speaking with a patient, she puts him into a trance and he sees terrible things in his memory, when the man goes home that night he holds his family hostage and ends up killing them and himself. While holding his family hostage he screams something in an unknown language and demands the doctor translate it. The authorities approach Dr. Tyler and discourage her from continuing her work. She pushes on and another patient volunteers to go under hypnosis, this patient goes into hysterics and when he snaps out of it he declares he saw non-human creatures and that they were the worst thing you could imagine.

The doctor goes home and takes notes into her tape recorder, the next day while reviewing the tape she learns she left the tape on when she fell asleep and that it recorded a night of terror, we can hear the doctor screaming and something being said in an unknown language. First she denies it but she notices a bruise on her shoulder and finds scratch marks on the floor like she was scratching the floor as someone dragged her away.

Dr. Tyler contacts a linguist that her husband had spoke with prior to passing and he translates the audio tape, he also tells her about the ancient Sumerian language and how early documents depict people in space suit like get ups.

The doctor herself ends up being abducted and becomes paralyzed, and her daughter goes missing and she claims she was taken away by a tractor beam, at the time that this all happened there was a police cruiser stationed outside the house and the officer starts freaking out saying he see`s something and the camera goes all distorted just as during any other encounter in the film.

I hope that got you hooked! Now go download  The Fourth Kind
