MARIJUANA DOES HELP CERTAIN PATIENTS |

Dr. Meldon Kahan is correct to be concerned about cannabis and the risk of psychotic symptoms. Studies reveal that the main increased risk remains for teens and individuals with established psychotic disorders. From the European Archives of Psychiatry ( 2009 ): "It is likely that cannabis exposure is a component cause, that interacts with other factors to 'cause' schizophrenia or a psychotic disorder, but is neither necessary nor sufficient to do so alone." From the International Journal of Drug Policy ( 2010 ): "The criteria for causal association between cannabis and psychosis are supported by the cohort studies reviewed, but the contentious issue of whether cannabis use can cause serious psychotic disorders that would otherwise not have occurred cannot be answered from the existing data."
What does this mean to doctors and medical cannabis patients? No different than any other medical treatment: close monitoring for benefits and side effects, compliance of dosing, negative risk avoidance strategies. In other words: pick and choose your patients, pick and choose your drug therapy, follow up regularly. It is science, not unfounded fear, which should dictate the practice of medicine.

NO SIGN OF REEFER MADNESS |

RE: More support needed to fight marijuana grow-ops
Robert T. Rock's assertion that "We're setting ourselves up for an explosion in mental health problems as the long-term effects of use become more apparent." doesn't hold water. Not only have the "studies" been repeatedly and soundly debunked, the math doesn't add up.
Canadians smoke the most potent pot in the world, we smoke more of it than any other country in the world, and teen pot use has increased four times in the past 30 years. There should have been a corresponding increase in the number of schizophrenia and psychosis cases in Canadian hospitals over that time, but the number of such cases has remained about the same at about 1.1% of the population. So while pot use has increased four times, psychosis has remained the same. So much for that "reefer madness" campaign.
And as for fixing the "grow-op" problem, how much more evidence do we need before we realize that the police and government approach is actually causing more problems than it is solving?

I saw a documentary about California's grow ops and all hey talked about was how much damage they do to areas planted. What they left out was the fact that if there was no black market for weed it would not be happening at all. Marijuana is the top profit maker for the cartels supplying the money to bring in the worse drugs, so I guess the politicians are halfway right about it being a gateway drug. People are being persecuted because they choose a different way of life and meanwhile top drug officials and the cartels are getting rich. But I believe change is going to come we just need to get our voices out there as much as possible and keep telling the real facts about the most useful plant in the world!
