RIM Looking Into Monetizing E-Mail
RIM Recently filed a few patents one being titled "SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR INCORPORATING MULTIMEDIA CONTENT INTO A MESSAGE HANDLED BY A MOBILE DEVICE". So basically they are doing the same thing as Gmail and Adsense. Another patent titled "SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR EVALUATING ADVERTISING METRICS" which described a method for determining whether an application or user has attempted to defraud RIM's advertising model. It seems like most critics believe that this is a bad idea in general and if done at all could easily be done through a partnership with Google. My opinion is that RIM doesn't want to associate themselves with Google since RIM is a super high security company where as Google has had many security leaks over the past year (think google voice, buzz, gmail). I also believe that it's a terrible idea for RIM to incorporate ads into our e-mails or other messages, this is moving away from the RIM and Blackberry history. Mike L likes to talk about bandwidth consumption and compression, well we all love faster information but please don't limit my bandwidth to advertise to me, I already paid 600 bones for my device I don't want to give RIM any more money! Let me hear your opinion in the comments.
